Dredge the Vermilion has released our latest list of Regional Flood Mitigation Project recommendations for the Teche-Vermilion Watershed. Projects phases on this list range from conceptual to permitting and engineering. The projects are listed from North to South.

It is critical to contact your political leaders today. You must insist these flood mitigation projects become the highest priority of our public works efforts.

Regional Flood Mitigation Project Recommendations

1. Utilize Lake Cocodrie in Evangeline and Rapides Parishes as a regional retention area for the northwest region of the watershed. Recommended by DTV to LDWF and LA DOTD.

2. Utilize Spring Bayou WMA in Avoyelles Parish as a regional retention area for the northeast region of the watershed. Recommended by DTV to LDWF and LA DOTD.

3. Utilize Thistlewaite WMA and the Bayou Waukesha watershed in St Landry Parish as a regional retention area for the north central region of the watershed. Recommended by DTV to LDWF and LA DOTD.

4. Construct a larger drainage flood control and water quality gate between Bayou Courtableau and Bayou Amy in St Landry Parish. Recommended by DTV to St Landry Parish, TVFD, LWI, LDWF, and LA DOTD.

5. Regap or remove spoil bank obstructions on the Enterprise Dixie Pipeline located in both St Landry and St Martin Parishes in the West Atchafalaya Floodway. Recommended by DTV to St Landry Parish, St. Martin Parish, LA CPRAย  Atchafalaya Basin Program, USACE, and LA DOTD.

6. DTV supports 2 St. Martin Parish projects that are funded and scheduled for execution beginning in 2021. These 2 projects are the Joe Daigle Canal Dredging in Cypress Island Swamp and the dredging of Lake Catahoula.

7. Dredge the Jaws Bay outlet that drains the entire Bayou Teche – Lakes Dautrive and Fausse Pointe complex. Recommended by DTV to St Mary and Iberia Parishes, LWI, and NOAA.

8. Regap or remove spoil bank obstructions on the Vermilion River located in St Martin Parishes in the Cypress Island Swamp. Recommended by DTV to Lafayette Parish, St. Martin Parish, The Nature Conservancy , LDWF, and LA DOTD.

9. Spot dredge the Vermilion River to remove severe shoaling that hinders drainage of the river that is causing higher risk of a major flood event and destruction of the Cypress Island swamp. Recommended by DTV to Lafayette Parish, St. Martin Parish, Vermilion Parish, The Nature Conservancy , and USACE.

10. Construct a diversion channel and control structure to connect Coulee Lasalle and the Joe Daigle canal in St Martin Parish to reduce flooding risks in Cade, Broussard, Youngsville, and along the Vermilion River. Recommended by DTV to Lafayette Parish, St. Martin Parish, and The Nature Conservancy.

11. Develop a plan to reduce flooding risks along Coulees Mine and Ill des Cannes and the Vermilion river. Recommended by DTV to Lafayette Parish and Vermilion Parish.

12. Formalize at the state of Louisiana level Teche-Vermilion Watershed flood risk coordination efforts by the various entities involved in responding to a potential flood event.

Dredge the Vermilion (DTV) is a non-profit setup to inform the public about the need to identify and to perform regional drainage projects in the Teche-Vermilion watershed.
The board of DTV are all citizen volunteers with varying backgrounds from engineering, business owners, business management, medical, and legal.
