WE NEED A FORMAL PLAN!

Dredge the Vermilion has updated a draft copy of a flood mitigation plan for the Teche Vermilion Watershed. We have been working on this plan since the 2016 flood but have yet to get it formalized and signed off on by all entitles involved.

In light of the tragic flood events recently in Texas we determine it is again time to propose a formal action plan to reduce our flooding risk when a storm event threatens the watershed. Below is an executive summary of the plan but the entire detailed plan may be found here:ย  Regional Flood Management Plan – v1.5.

What can you do? Contact your public officials and ask them to formalize a plan that calls for coordination with Federal and State entities, and the other parishes in our watershed to proactively manage expected flood waters BEFORE the storm is upon us.

Executive Summary โ€“ Teche-Vermilion Watershed Flood Management Plan
Objective
Formalize a plan to minimize the risk of a major flood event in the Teche-Vermilion Watershed.
Basis of Plan
The plan would consist of lowering stages of major tributaries in advance in anticipation of a forecasted major rain event utilizing existing control structures, systems, and resources. This process establishes retention for a portion of the expected rainfall. Additionally, efforts will be executed to position gates and related water control systems to facilitate the efficient and safe movement of flood waters to the watershedโ€™s flood plains and ultimately to the Gulf of America.

Entities Involved in Operation of Plan
Plan Administrator and Plan Operations Coordinator TBD
US Army Corps of Engineers(USACE)
Teche -Vermilion Freshwater District(TVFD)
St. Martin Parish Government and LA Wildlife and Fisheries
Red River, Atchafalaya and Bayou Boeuf Levee District (RRABB)
